Bjorn Stevens elected AGU Fellow
Bjorn Stevens, Director of the Climate Physics department at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, has been elected as a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), the world's largest association for Earth system and space sciences. Every year, the AGU honors a select group of individuals for their exceptional scientific contributions and their exemplary leadership qualities. AGU Fellows advise government agencies and other organizations outside the sciences upon request.
Bjorn Stevens’s research investigates how physical processes—especially in the atmosphere—shape the climate. It has identified and quantified how water vapor, clouds, and rain systems organize themselves, the varied processes that influence this organization, and how they couple to larger-scale circulation systems. His interests have led him to develop new observational techniques, which he employs in ambitious field studies like the recent ORCESTRA and EUREC4A campaigns. In addition, Stevens is constantly expanding the frontiers of Earth system modeling to develop and test theories. For example, through projects like nextGEMS and WarmWorld, he and his team are pioneering the use of kilometer-scale Earth system models and are promoting the innovative use and provision of their output through initiatives such as Earth Virtualization Engines (EVE) and Destination Earth. Stevens's ideas, initiatives, and innovations continuously provide new impetus in climate science. He has been a leader in developing new formats for researchers from different career stages, disciplines, and backgrounds to share their expertise.
The 2025 AGU Fellows will be recognized at AGU25, which will convene in New Orleans, Louisiana on 15–19 December 2025. Reflecting the theme “Where Science Connects Us” at AGU25, the Honors Ceremony will recognize groundbreaking achievements that illustrate science's continual advancement, inspiring the AGU community with their stories and successes.
