Research Scientist in the Group Ocean Biogeochemistry

I am a mathematician and biogeochemical modeller by training with a fascination for understanding the functioning of the Earth system. I am particularly interested in the global carbon and nutrient cycles and their interrelations with past, present, and future climate change. I like developing and playing with all kinds of computational models, from simple diagenetic and mixing models for the sediments to global Earth System Models (ESMs). I use these models to investigate biogeochemical dynamics 1) in different environments ranging from the entire Earth system to local carbon burial hotspots in marine sediments and 2) during diverse extreme climate events over Earth's history (e.g., the Permian/Triassic, the Cretaceous, the end of the Paleocene). The goal is to advance our understanding of the environmental consequences of extreme climate change in the past to better predict the future.

I am always keen to learn new things about the fascinating and crazy ways the Earth system regulates itself. In particular, collaborations with colleagues working with observations and (bio)geochemical proxies are inspiring and fruitful. Their data is indispensable for ground-truthing the numerical models, and their different perspective teaches modellers about new 'real-world' processes that might be worth including in the numerical models.

Since May 2022, I have been a 'Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter'/PostDoc in the Ocean Biogeochemistry group at the MPI for Meteorology in Hamburg. As part of a large EU project (ESM2025), I am helping to develop a new generation of ESMs. In particular, I am working on improving the representation of the marine nitrogen cycle in the new high-resolution ICON-ESM to better predict the environmental consequences of future climate change.

Besides research, I like pretty much anything that can be done outdoors (e.g., running, biking, climbing, reading, sitting in the sun) and relaxing with my wife and Californian cat, Owen.
