Joint Seminar: 13 years of Terra Observations: Implications for the Rate of Change of Equilibrium Surface Temperature

The observational records from MISR and CERES on the Terra satellite, from 2000 to present, are still too short to be definitive of long-term change. They do, however, show interesting hints of competing trends due to changes in cloud properties — effective height and albedo —that occur at different latitudes and do not necessarily cancel. If either effect ultimately dominates, it will alter the long-term rate of change of surface temperature. I’ll discuss the observational evidence for these changes, examine their potential net effect using a new radiative-convective equilibrium climate model, and note some of the challenges for future modeling.
