Climate researchers from Taiwan visiting MPI-M

Eight scientists from National Science and Technology Center for Desaster Reduction (NCDR) and Academia Sinica Research Center for Environmental Changes visited the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology on 24th of April 2018.

The aim of the visit was a practical exchange between MPI-M and Taiwanese institutions about new accomplishments in climate modelling and results in the research field "past, present and future climate variability" as well as a discussion about the possibility of data exchange for analyses of simulations and observations.

The Taiwanese climate researchers are highly interested in the new ICON model system. They have already worked with the ECHAM5 model and adapted individual climate model components (CESM and HiRAM) to enhance the simulation of the Madden-Julian Oscillation in the tropics and the predictability of typhoons or other extreme weather conditions. They presented their results during the meeting.

The MPI-M scientists delivered insights into the current institute's modelling strategy based on ICON. They presented the latest developments of the ICON model system and its components, and used current research projects to illustrate the new potentials and possibilities that the new model opens up in climate modelling. Two junior scientists from the department "The Ocean in the Earth System" presented current research activities on climate variability and paleo modelling based on the MPI-ESM.
