The Jury’s Laudatio:

“Prof Kerry Emanuel, Professor of Atmospheric Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), is recognized for fundamental contributions to understanding of tropical cyclones (hurricanes and typhoons) and how they are affected by climate change. By understanding the essential physics of atmospheric convection, he has unraveled the behavior of tropical cyclones as climate changes. His theories predict the observed intensification of hurricanes and typhoons with global warming. This research has opened new approaches for assessing risks from weather extremes. In addition to his pioneering theoretical contribution, Professor Emanuel is very active and extraordinarily effective in communicating the science of climate change the public and policy makers.”

He joins an illustrious list of past award winners, including Prof Klaus Hasselmann, the founding director of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology. In congratulating the recipient, Prof Bjorn Stevens says: “It is hard to imagine an area of climate science where one person’s leadership is so incontestable.”
