Humboldt Research Fellow Thibaut Dauhut starts working at MPI-M

Thibaut Dauhut, Ph.D., a PostDoc from the Laboratoire d'Aérologie at the Université de Toulouse, France, was selected by the Alexander von Humboldt foundation to receive a Humboldt Research Fellowship for Postdoctoral Researchers. For his 18-month stay he joins the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) from 1st May 2019 on and will be working in the group "Precipitating Convection" in the department "The Atmosphere in the Earth System" with Dr Cathy Hohenegger.

Thibaut Dauhut studies how deep convection transports air and water into the tropical lower stratosphere. This transport impacts the composition and the radiative properties of the stratosphere, both of key importance for the future of our climate. Thibaut Dauhut works with cutting-edge Large-Eddy Simulations (LES), with resolutions as fine as 100 m. He investigates the small-scale processes (updrafts, low-level convergence, entrainment by cloud eddies, overshoots) that determine the capability of the very deep convective systems to hydrate the stratosphere. At the MPI-M he will study the impact of these systems on the water cycle, both at the surface via extreme precipitation, and up to the stratosphere via overshoot transport. He will focus on the Maritime Continent, a broad region covering the Indonesian Islands and the South-East Asia, that is key for the global-scale circulation and the stratosphere composition.

Researchers from abroad with above average qualifications, at the beginning of their academic career and who completed their doctorate in the last four years can apply to the Humboldt Research Fellowship program for Postdoctoral Researchers. Such a fellowship allows carrying out long-term research (6-24 months) in Germany. Applicants choose their own topic of research and their academic host.
