Administrative Centre for China's Agenda 21 visits MPI-M

A delegation of high-level representatives from the Administrative Centre for China's Agenda 21 (ACCA21) of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China visited the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) and the German Climate Computing Centre (DKRZ) on 29th of April 2019.

The ACCA21 was established in 1994 with the mission to conduct policy and strategy research and foster international cooperation and exchange in the area of sustainable development.

The aim of the visit was therefore to provide insights into the institute's current research agenda, to exchange latest developments and future plans and to evaluate the potential for joint research projects.

The meeting started at DRKZ where the Chinese guest visited the High Performance Computing system "Mistral" for Earth system research. It then continued at the MPI-M with an overview on the institute by Professor Jochem Marotzke followed by scientific presentations from all three departments paired with presentations from the Chinese guests.

The MPI-M scientists presented the technological development of the global storm-resolving simulations with ICON, and the promising results of the first international inter-comparison project of global storm-resolving models (DYAMOND). They reported about an ongoing joint research plan between MPI-M and the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Science on porting ICON to the Chinese TaihuLight supercomputer for performing global storm-resolving simulations on this machine. In further lectures the scientists delivered insights into some of the current research projects on greening the Earth through human land-use management, on understanding the processes governing the human-Earth environment systems, and on formulating adaptation and mitigation strategies.

The Chinese ministerial representatives were highly interested in the institute's current modelling and research strategy. They reported about changes in climate extremes and their consequences in China and presented the Chinese national adaptation strategy and plan of action on climate change.
