Joint Seminar: Inferences from Simple Models of Tropical Convection

I will present a maximally simply conceptual and mathematical framework for understanding and analyzing "slow" convectively coupled tropical circulations; i.e., circulations whose time scales are governed by the time it takes to moisten the free troposphere rather than by the time scale of buoyancy-driven oscillations. I will show how this simple framework can be used to understand the humidity of radiative-convective equilibrium states, the structure and intensity of the Walker circulation, the sharpness of the transition between dry and precipitating states, the relationship between precipitation and moisture in the tropics, self-aggregation of convection, and the MJO.
