The MPI-M mourns the passing of Ernst Maier-Reimer

On Monday, 22nd of July 2013, Ernst Maier-Reimer died from complications following his cancer surgery. He was only 69 years old. Ernst was an exceptional scientist. He was the towering figure in ocean-model development at the MPI-M for almost 35 years. Ernst single-handedly developed a whole string of ocean models; his landmark achievement was in 1987 the worldwide first three-dimensional simulation of the ocean carbon cycle.

Ernst was a warm-hearted and very humble person who generously shared his deep insights. He did not speak much, but every word he said was well thought out. Ernst kept working after his formal retirement, and even during the last weeks of his life he came in to work, taking leave from his hospital treatment.

The MPI-M is hard to imagine without Ernst Maier-Reimer, but this has become sad reality.
